iCame, iSaw, iConquered... iPad

Apologies to any Julius Caesar fans for bastardizing his famous quote for the sake of an iPad... but, ya know, it's an iPad and with it, all things are possible, including ruining famous latin quotes.

Do you remember waaaaay back when I won a little thing called the Aussie Mummy Blogger with the X Factor Award??? It was a collaboration between Home Loan Finder and Aussie Mummy Bloggers (now Digital Parents). There were caricatures and votes and tweets and Facebook likes...   No? Well, I did. Apparently, I have X Factor, which translated to everyday speak is the ability to get people engaged enough to vote. So massive thanks to everyone who voted!

And my prize was *drum roll* a framed certificate and a personalized iPad2!!!!!!!!! (need more exclamation marks) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

iHave iStuff iNow!
On the back it says:

"Glowless - 2011 Mummy Blogger with
the X Factor Winner - Home Loan Finder"

Which does allude to their being a 2012 version too... hrmmmmmmm.

Until it arrived last week, I was an iVirgin. Before that, the only Apple products I've touched have been of the Granny Smith variety.

Yet here I am, proud owner of a freakin iPad!

It arrived in a massive box of bubble wrap, which I'm pretty sure was an extra prize (who doesn't love bubble wrap?) and I opened it up and discovered that iPads are super thin and light (you knew that though) and that I have no freakin clue how to operate one.

Have you noticed how things don't come with physical manuals any more? I would always read a manual first - well not the whole manual, I'd only read the 'Quick Start' section and get on there and figure the rest out myself. Manuals are inside things these days so I didn't even know how to turn it on and had to confess my iTechnodouchery on Twitter in an appeal for help (thanks, Louisa!)

Who knew you had to have iTunes first?! All I wanted to do was fire this baby up and I had to bloody wait while iTunes downloaded and installed then tried to take over the iWorld.

So after major delays I finally got the thing started and did what all the people who've had iEnvy for so long do... went to the App Store to get me some free shit! As a result I'm now on Instagram and bombarding everyone with photos of Tricky (ooh look, Tricky sitting at the window, Tricky on a swing, Tricky standing up...).

My only problem with the iPad is that it has wooed my Mother-In-Law with it's e-reader and Chicktionary to the point where she has asked for one for Christmas...

Do you have an iSomething? What Apps should I get? Or do you have iEnvy?

  1. Woo hoo! So excited for you!

My problem is that I didn't even think of wanting one until I was beaten by another blogger (who shall remain nameless... oh wait...) to win one. And now I'm drooling over them in the shops!

  3. I've managed to stay away from all iProducts so far with the exception of my iPod Nano (that I won at the work Christmas party last year which I don't even use that much). They are a little out of my price range. I nearly got an iPhone at the end of last year, but got talked out of it by my stepfather and got the phone he recommended instead. I actually downloaded Spore (for the princely sum of $3) for it yesterday and have been having lots of fun with that.

  4. Ohh yay! I was wondering if you'd received it yet. I have an iPhone and honestly, HOW did I live before?? I'm pretty desperate for an iPad - though I am not even sure why yet, I think I simply have an iAddiction.
Instagram is one of my all time fave apps.
I look forward to hearing more about your shiny new toy!

  6. Miss 9 asked last year if she could have one for her birthday next week. Glad you're having fun with it. It's now going to turn you into an ijunkie.

  8. I have an iPhone4 and that's about it.
I'd be lost with an iPad but I do desperately want one!

Vote for me on Kleenex Mums 'So you think you can blog?' so I can win one...?

    Haha, shameless plugging!
Keep the pics coming on Instagram.
I love seeing Tricky standing near the window :) x

  9. I have an iPhone and iPod and a Mac book.  I am a complete and utter Apple snob.  I would love an iPad but can't quite figure out why I would need it exactly.... As soon as I do, it will be on The Christmas List.

Just warning you - once you go Apple, you never go back.... ;)

  10. I married an iMan. Well, back then it was just plain old apple mac... man.   Oh how people mocked. Where would this silly company with their simple computers ever go?  Who's laughing now?
We are an iFamily. iPads iPods, iPhones, iMacs.  iLove them all. Obviously I didn't need one, which I why I let *cough* you win.

  12. Yay you.
I have an IPhone and no shit that thing has changed my life. I do my lists on it, my shopping lists, store recipes, blog from it, use a meditation app and a weight loss calculator....you name it. I LOVE IT. Not to mention listening to Pat Benatar on the treadmill while crying at the gym :)
Somehow I reckon once you get going with apps that I can just picture you rocking the IWorld from your pad. Hmmmmmmm downloading a Glowless app anyone? xx

  13. Well deserved and well done!

I am addicted to my iPhone. I do everything on there from banking  to blogging to playing games and writing lists. It is absolutely crucial to me to have it with me everywhere now. Although that isnt necessarily a good thing.

  14. iStuff is overpriced and overengineered but OMG I LOVE IT! I started off just with an iPhone and that quickly became my best friend and something that would make me think twice about the baby being the first thing I would pick up if the house were on fire. I mean, how would I record our desperate escape from a burning house without my iPhone? It helped me through many a long breast-feeding night and enables me to get little snippets of work done in between mouthfuls (his not mine) at dinnertime.
My husband then spoilt me at Christmas with an iPad and I love it too but I have to admit that it is a luxury, whereas the iPhone is out and out necessity. I love Flipboard (esp for Google Reader) and use it for games and also especially for ABC iView to catch up on stuff while my husband is watching something less exciting on the real TV. Enjoy :-)

  15. I do not own any iProducts. And yes, I sleep just fine at night.
The iPad looks fun though! I had a student nurse at one of my antenatal appointments (many moons ago) and she was carrying an iPad with her. It had an app that let you chase fish in a pond. My daughter was fascinated.
Im freaking sick of that ad on TV telling me that ''If you dont own an iPhone .... you don't own an iPhone''.Clearly!

  16. Ooooh, yes, very jealous! Congrats on the win too, that's awesome! Last year we went travelling and I bought a little netbook to take with, hubby kept saying "you shoulda got an iPad", and well, don't tell him, but I think he was right!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I have an iPhone that I love dearly. But I am so so jealous! I NEED and iPad. Hubby is adamant that one isn't entering our house. :-(

i have iEnvy, absolutely...I loved your title to this post soo much, it made me laugh. You are a clever girl. And I am not sure that I have ever come across a Julias Caesar fan before, are there many?? Hee hee, congrats on your win. iFabulous!

  19. iEnvy over here.

I am so glad you got and I hope you enjoy it when you finally wrangle it out of your MIL's clutches

  20. Same! Wasn't til I saw that I was in with a chance that I thought I really wanted it - have spent the last six weeks reading every review, just waiting for it to arrive.

  21. It really is just a big iPhone that you can't make calls on... though if you're wanting a screen big enough to show your doctor all your xrays then it's great (yes, there's an App for that!)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thank you for letting me win, Naomi... the iJealousy was getting a little much for me - especially after the conference when you all whipped out your iPhones and I was there with my little Samsung! Maybe your iFamily can teach me some iTricks?

  23. A Glowless App?!?!?! OMG I will take over the world!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I have iEnvy! And I too like to put the letter 'i' in front of anything remotely applicable. Love the iTunes taking over the iWorld bit. Recently my parents brought my little brother an iTouch, which in turn converted my mother to the iGeneration too. It's so addictive! Have fun!

    My iTechnology post is here:

  25. You may be a self-professed Glowless Lady, but you are not a humour-less lady. Funny Lady :)

I love bragging about the fact that I'm Gen Y, because I manage to JUST scrape in (by some definitions - I think the wikipedia definition, the only one that matters, right?). But, my lack of iKnowledge might make one think otherwise. Hubby is a photographer and iObssessed. And, yes, for creative visual types, Apple is definitely the bomb. For humble writers like me, who really just need Firefox and Word, I shall remain iIgnorant.

Congratulations, Miss X Factor. When you accepted the crown, did you do the hand-over-the-face move, *fake surprise* look, Miss Universe style?

  26. Oh, lucky, lucky you! And congratulations and well done and lucky, lucky you!!!!!

    Mmmm, e-reader......

  27. I am the somewaht reluctant owner of an iphone. Not sure if the ipad takes photos but if it does there is an app called Hipstamatic that takes photos that look like old fashioned photos rather than digital photos. You can put lots of different effects on them eg "torn" edges, sepia, b&w. The things you didn't know you needed!

  28. You have to get iTunes? I'm an ivirgin too, but i'm eagerly awaiting the iPad the lovely people at Nuffnang are giving to me for tweeting to myself. WAITING. Love shiny new gadgety things. Have set up my wi-fi and everything. WAITING. Not that i'm at all impatient!

  29. I have an ipod from 2005....doesn't really count anymore does it?
I have iphone envy for the apps. That's it. I am a BlackBerry girl at heart because i hate touch anything, i like buttons, i like to push buttons....does that surprise you? No? Didn't think so.
Never even touched an ipad, and only iphone i've ever touched is my BFF's which Bluey can operate, scarily so, and i struggled to write a text to her BF saying "Yes" gosh that was the hardest thing i've done since school! lol.

  30. you know, i want one but with a laptop, a netbook plus my iPhone i don't think i could justify "needing" an iPad to Guv....

    Enjoy!

    I am so jealous!!!!

  32. I haven't got an ipad *sob* but my husband does which seems grossly unfair. Happy ipadding. I haven't tried instagram either but clearly this is something I can actually do from my laptop. I can, can't I? Or am I completely out of the technology game altogether?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh yay! I am not an Apple fan at all but I also recently won an iPad and am slowly coming to love it. It's certainly handy to have something so portable. Have fun!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'd say you don't need one if you have an iPhone... it's kinda just a big one.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It took so long because they had it personalized so couldn't order it until they knew the result. I couldn't afford an iPhone when I last updated my phone about a year ago - I still can't but probably will stretch the budget next time :)

  36. So far I'm only up to the playing games thing - haven't done anything important at all. Need to get me some sort of shopping list App so I can swan up and down the isles with it in my hand and pretend I'm cool.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Apparently if they were manufactured in America they'd cost about $14,000! Just got Flipboard on your recommendation and it looks awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm gonna get a super duper case for it and give it to Tricky for our 6 hour road trips to visit his grandparents!

    ReplyDelete
  39. No I'm not sure he has fans... but I think of the quote every single time I hear about an iProduct!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yep it does, though I do look strange holding up a giant thing to take a picture :P

    ReplyDelete
  41. I don't think you can use Instagram from from a laptop? Will have to investigate this.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I would never have bought one myself... but you know, I wouldn't turn it down! Definitely learning to love it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. iThought you'd have fun with that bubble wrap, Glowless! Having been the lucky one from Home Loan Finder to mail it over, I can report that the iEnvy in the post office was off the scale! There were beady eyes fixed upon your prize from every direction! I'm just glad it arrived safely. Once again, well done on winning the competition.
