But there is a way! Hair chalking!
I tried it out with some subtle pink (well, it's subtle next to my purple at least) and really liked it so decided to go contrasting blue too:
Ever heard of it? It's been big in the US for a while and is gaining popularity over here rapidly. So how do you do it? It's SO easy, just grab yourself some artist's chalks and go for it:
As you can see from the pic, I have heaps of vibrant colours in my chalk box and I can't wait to try them all out. You can also use eyeshadow pigments for this - I have some loose MAC colours from my days as a makeup artist so they'll be next on my list.
As soon as you've finished, clean the massive mess of chalk that has fallen around you or it might stain. It's also best not to wear your fave clothes or sleep on your expensive white pillowcase because the fallout is pretty bad.
It is really hard to style your hair afterwards because the chalked sections feel like they have half a can of hairspray in them... plus every time you touch it your hands will come away a little tainted. I ended up looking like I'd been inappropriately dealing with a Smurf.
Yet another downside to this is that if you do it more than a few times in a row it will seriously dry your hair out. Make sure you have a good conditioner on hand to repair! But for the price of a box of chalks ($10-15 at a local art store) it's a cheap way to get quick, vibrant, one-night colour.

ReplyDeleteI wonder if the 'hair chalk' rather than artist's chalk has a less damagin effect, haven't looked into it coz I'm lazy like that but, maybe?
ReplyDeleteI did this to my hair back in Janurary. It is a real fun way to play with the idea of colour, especially for brunette's (I understand the dilemma so well).
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with the downside of the drying. This is NOT something you can do every day, or every couple of days. The drying and thus damage was too much for my hair.
I also found for blondes you will need to shampoo twice. The colour does hold well but yes, it's dusty when you put it on.
Also don't go using your kids chalkboard chalk. It won't work. You need to get chalk pastels.
From what I understand Matilda there wouldn't be much of a difference because the damage the chalk is doing to your hair is that it's a dust stripping your hairs oils, thus drying your hair out and the need for a good conditioning afterward.
ReplyDeleteThat looks awesome! We were only talking about colouring tips on Saturday night - chalk had NEVER occurred to me! I love the blue. My only issue is I used blue Fudge when I was 15, purple too, so to do it now would make me feel like I'm on the verge of a premature mid-life crisis!

ReplyDeleteI had bright pink hair for just over a year soon after I turned 18... I've always wanted to go back to it but had work then college then work again and just never got the chance. I should just do it now :)
ReplyDeleteI've heard some people say if there is any oil in the chalk that it's a no no for blondes because it just sinks straight in and stains the hair shaft :(
ReplyDeleteIt's all the same thing, they just charge you a lot more money by putting 'hair chalk' on it. It has the benefit of being less messy though because of the applicator ball.

ReplyDeleteI was JUST thinking about this last week. I saw someone advertising 'hair chalk dye' or some shit and thought, "bitch please, I'm not paying that for one piece of chalk". I will be trying this out now that I have blonde in the bottom of my hair, I want to be perdy.
